Shadow Mountain High School’s North Valley Arts Academies (NVAA) Theatre program was nominated for eight ASU Gammage High School Musical Theatre Awards for their performance in Urinetown.
“Our students did great work this year and exhibited tremendous growth during the rehearsal process! I’m very proud of what they accomplished and this show was a much-needed ‘balm’ from a rough year,” said Joe Flowers, NVAA Theatre teacher.

“This has obviously been a rough school year for students and faculty, and the sense of not knowing what challenges the next week or month would hold really made it tough to plan future events. I really wanted to provide the students with a live performance opportunity but wasn’t sure if it was possible. I did a lot of research and planning and came up with the idea that a live-streamed televised production of our musical would allow our Drama Department to simulate a typical year as closely as we could. However, there was always a sense that the situation in the local community could change at a moment’s notice and really take the show under. So on a personal and professional level, to have successfully produced the show and then receive this many nominations for the students’ work is really a nice affirmation that our flexibility and creativeness really paid off. I’m always proud of the growth our students exhibit in our program and having their talents recognized by outside individuals, particularly these awards, is very gratifying,” said Flowers.
Every category winner, except the Best Lead Female and Male, simply receives recognition. The winners of the Best Lead category are invited to the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, known as the Jimmy Awards. Two winners are selected from every state. Normally, the winners are flown out to New York for two weeks of workshops and rehearsals, culminating in a live performance; however, this year the workshops and performances will be streamed at https://www.jimmyawards.com/.
This is the third time that the NVAA Theatre has received recognition from the ASU Gammage High School Musical Theatre Awards. They were previously recognized for Spamalot and Willy Wonka; however, this is the first time cast and crew have been recognized in this many categories, both for acting and for technical work.
